The title Pythagoras could hear comes from one of the most sublime legends of “the music of the spheres.” Pythagoras was said to have derived these theories from observing mundane reality and listening very closely to the world around him. His theories of music and geometry are a blending of science and art that ultimately manifest in healing and harmony. These ideas were transferred into models about the structure of the universe. The essential harmony that lays within the cosmos and which we are a part of is the inspiration behind this piece. Pythagoras could hear is a lyrical installation of spheres made of wood, gold and resin. These small 3-inch in diameter spheres are placed in a particular pattern or progression within an architectural space or natural environment. Inspired by cosmology, ancient scrying balls and planetary constellations this work furthers my exploration into the relationship between perception and the imagination. Intentionally devoid of any technology and present day cultural icon the installation maintains an essential visceral experience of an older knowledge and memory. It is my intention to create an environment that communicates a heightened sense of human pathos and universal space.
